Washington, D.C. – The Coalition for the Northeast Corridor (CNEC) applauds the House Appropriations Chairwoman Nita Lowey (N.Y.) for recognizing the importance of investing in Gateway transit projects, including the Portal North Bridge and Penn Station. Lowey announced $139 million in federal grants for the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority and New Jersey Transit through the Federal Railroad Administration’s Federal-State Partnership for the State of Good Repair program to facilitate safer, more efficient travel along the Northeast Corridor.
“Getting this significant and desperately needed increase in funding is a welcomed milestone in improving the safety and viability of the Northeast Corridor. We are encouraged to see Congresswoman Lowey prioritizing this critical need to bring the corridor to a state of good repair,” said Amit Bose, Chairman of CNEC.
According to numerous reports, the Corridor’s rail infrastructure will fail without major investment posing serious challenges for the economy of the Northeast and across the United States. The Northeast Corridor Commission asserts “the loss of the Northeast Corridor for a single day could cost the country $100 million in added congestion, productivity losses, and other transportation impacts.”
